Bipolar disorder – known as the manic depressive disorder is a disorder that affects an individual’s brain resulting in unusual behavior. The symptoms may be very difficult to diagnose as they may resemble other mental disorders.

Types of Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder can be categorized into four different classes.

  • Bipolar I disorder– It is characterized by manic episodes lasting for about seven continuous days. During this phase, the sufferer can be hyperactive and irresponsible. The sufferer may also experience depressive disorder which lasts a minimum of two weeks.
  • Bipolar II disorder- This is characterized by recurring episodes of major depression and hypomania.

  • Cyclothymia and Cyclothymic Disorder– This category has mildest bipolar symptoms. It consists of clinical mood swings. However, the highs and lows are not severed.

Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition. When left untreated the ups and downs of the mood can be devastating. Successful treatment of bipolar disorder depends on many factors. Medication alone is not enough for curing this disorder.
